The anticipation surrounding the recent awards show was significant, especially after host Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious photo of a desert monolith. The secret has been revealed. Larian Studios is developing a fresh Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer packed with striking imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the very descent into chaos.
A Different Direction
Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio stated ahead of time that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not on the cards right now.
However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This choice of words suggests that the team might be designing a more action-oriented experience rather than another turn-based title. For now, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it kicked off the recent resurgence of complex computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for intricate stories, player agency, and deep class systems—qualities that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is classic fantasy, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency granted to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with unique possibilities you can achieve if you're playing as a particular class or origin with a unique decision path.
The series is also wonderfully flexible, letting players to find creative solutions both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be solved in multiple ways, sometimes in lateral fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something a dog told you.
- Or, you could bypass a challenge by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.
A New Chapter Begins
It is these creative systems that lead fans and critics to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can get ready for a new entry in this legendary franchise.
